Designed around people rather than stacks of books, 21st-century libraries, such as the newly renovated John C. Hitt Library, incorporate more natural lighting and more open spaces for learning, studying and collaborating. Books are no longer front and center, but that doesn't mean they're gone.

The Downtown Bend Library was designed by Thomas Hacker and Associates of Portland, Oregon. The two-story, 38,855-square-foot library opened in 1998 and features exposed beams and high ceilings, complemented with eastward-facing windows, looking over Bend's civic square. The library's large children's area, located on the ground floor.

The East Bend Library is a rented 8,000 square foot storefront designed by Jim Landin and BRLB/GGL Architects of Bend. This small and mighty library offers full services such as books, music, and movies; public computers; a community meeting room and hosts.

John C. Hitt Library Expansion. The UCF Library Expansion is a multi-phase, multi-year project whose goal is to modernize the library and increase individual and group study space. The first phase, Phase 1, consists of a stand-alone Automatic Retrieval Center (ARC) which can store up to 750,000 volumes of library materials.
